Image Details:"Lilium Japonicum"--from "A Selection of Hexandrian Plants, belonging to the natural orders Amaryllidae and Liliacae" (London, 1831-34). With this work (which attracted 79 subscribers, including John James Audubon), Mrs. Bury (ca. 1800-late 1860s) endeavored "to preserve some memorial of the brilliant and fugitive beauties, of a particularly splendid and elegant tribe of plants." Her lovely drawings of amaryllis and lilies were engraved by the gifted English-born American landscape painter and printmaker Robert Havell, Jr., who also worked on Audubon's "Birds of America." |
