Image Details:

A photograph taken March 20, 1936, looking west along the little alley lined with 19th-century carriage houses, which runs between University Place and Fifth Avenue, toward a large Art Deco apartment building (One Fifth Avenue); by the time Abbott took this photograph, the carriage houses had long been converted into living spaces that were popular with the artists and other Bohemians who flocked to Greenwich Village from around the world--from Abbott's Changing New York project (1935-38), which sought to document the rapidly changing built environment of "the world's greatest metropolis." Changing New York was supported by the Federal Art Project (FAP) of the Works Progress Administration (WPA).
