Because his parents would not give Pissaro permission to be an artist, he ran away from home to devote himself to painting. After realizing their son was serious, the Pissaros pledged their support. He ended up living in Paris and joining with other artists who began the Impressionist movement. Although he struggled for recognition and acceptance for most of his life, by 74 he finally gained the respect of art critics and collectors.
