Image Details:"Odontoglossum crispum"--a chromolithograph from Frederick Sander's "Reichenbachia: Orchids Illustrated and Described" (St. Albans: F. Sander & Co., 1888-94), one of the greatest illustrated botanical works ever published. An English commercial nurseryman and an important collector and seller of orchids, Sander (1847-1920) hired H.G. Moon to paint watercolors for his comprehensive "Reichenbachia," whose descriptions were taken from Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach (1824-1889), one of the 19th century's foremost authorities on the orchid family. |
