Caryophyllus VI; Caryophyllus VII"--one of the superb engravings from the "Hortus nitidissimis" (Nurenberg, 1768-86) by the German botanist and physician Christoph JacobTrew (1695-1769). The principal artist of the "Hortus nitidissimis" was Georg Dionysius Ehret (1708-1770), one of the greatest of all botanical illustrators. Born in Germany, Ehret settled permanently in England in 1736. The eminent Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778) wrote of Ehret's plant drawings: "Nothing to equal them was seen in the past or will be in the future.
